DESCRIPTION:Join us for an enlightening workshop at Maastricht University\, led by Olaf Janssen\, the Wikimedia coordinator for the Koninklijke Bibliotheek\, the national library of the Netherlands. \n\n\n\nThis session\, a collaborative effort between The Plant and Maastricht University Library\, aims to explore the potential of Wikidata across various domains of knowledge.       \n\n\n\nnnn \n\n\n\nWorkshop Overview\n\n\n\nWikidata is a free\, collaborative\, multilingual database\, collecting structured open data for anyone in the world to use. It also plays a crucial role in supporting Wikimedia projects\, such as Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. Over the last 12 years it has strongly increased in popularity among the scientific and GLAM (Galleries\, Libraries\, Archives\, and Museums) communities. \n\n\n\nThis 2.5-hour workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to Wikidata\, blending theory with practical\, hands-on experience. Participants will delve into the following areas: \n\n\n\n\nUnderstanding Wikidata: Learn about the mechanics and community ethos behind Wikidata\, uncovering how it functions both technically and socially.\n\n\n\nThe relevance of Wikidata: Explore the pivotal role of Wikidata in supporting research\, science\, and global knowledge sharing\, highlighting its benefits and diverse applications.\n\n\n\nContributing to Wikidata: Gain practical skills in contributing to Wikidata (with a focus on the topic of UM professors from past and present)\, empowering you to enrich this vast repository of open data.  \n\n\n\n\nnnn \n\n\n\nWho Should Attend?\n\n\n\nThis workshop is tailored for academics\, researchers\, and anyone interested in working with Wikidata and in the intersection of open data\, research\, and science. SUMMARY:Teaching\, Writing\, & Research in Times of GenAI
DESCRIPTION:Coordinated by Flora Lysen and Charles van Leeuwen \n\n\n\nTuesday 29 October / 11.00 – 13.00 / The Plant \n\n\n\nGenerative AI writing tools have sparked significant controversy\, particularly among academic writing instructors. Some writing educators view language models like ChatGPT as a valuable “opportunity to re-examine our practices and ensure that how and what we teach aligns with our pedagogical values” (Warner 2022). Others see it as a threat to the art of thinking through writing: “using ChatGPT to complete assignments is like bringing a forklift into the weight room; you will never improve your cognitive fitness that way” (Chiang 2024). Regardless of differing opinions\, FASoS writing instructors will need to adapt the content of their courses. The question is not if we have to address AI tools in writing courses\, but how we can best do it. Many staff will realise their lack of experience and expertise in this domain. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is dedicated to co-creating assignments that teach students (and staff) how to use generative AI as an aid in the research and writing process\, rather than as a replacement for their own work. Participating instructors will explore some best practices for integrating AI into writing education. In the coming months\, additional workshop sessions will follow\, focusing on related GenAI topics. \n\n\n\nRegistration for this event is capped at 16 participants. In case of oversubscription\, priority will be given to colleagues coordinating/tutoring actively in skills courses.
